Forgiven in Christ Means Forgiving Others

Forgiveness is something we so eagerly want for ourselves, but have a really hard time giving out to others. I think it's just human nature. When we mess up, we don't want it to be held against us, but oh boy! If someone else messes up we are right there to preserve it in a jar and set it on a shelf to remind them of it every chance we get..... right?

I think it's a way to make ourselves feel better about our own faults if we can say " well remember when you did this last week?" and justify the fact that we aren't perfect but we are better than "so-and-so."

But here is the TRUTH. YOU AREN'T PERFECT. And neither am I. And the fact is, we all desperately need forgiveness every single day. The Bible commands us to forgive, Ephesians 4:32 - "And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you."

But I think that God knew it wouldn't be enough to just tell us to forgive, so He also gave us consequences if we don't. Mark 11:25 - "And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses." How can we expect God to forgive us when we aren't willing to forgive others?

When we choose not to forgive, we begin to harbor bitterness, anger, resentment, and even hate for that person. When those emotions are in our heart, God can't abide with us there. I know it for a fact because I've been there... as recently as yesterday.

I had a battle in my heart that had lasted over a year! Someone in the church had treated me in a "not so Christ like " manner and I held on to that bitterness. I never received an apology. But God was dealing with my heart on the matter, so I finally gave in to Jesus and sent her a text apologizing for my negativity toward her. Because I knew if I didn't ask for forgiveness for my negative behavior, I couldn't expect the Lord to ever help me grow past this point. And it was like a burden was lifted off my shoulders, because I was right with my Savior.

Asking for forgiveness can be a humbling experience, but it can also solidify that bond between Believers. God tells us in James 5:16- Confess [your] faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

Confess, Forgive, and Pray for each other. It's the true cycle of a relationship. it builds a bond that can't be broken and promotes love instead of discord. (Because we all know women have more issues with that.) Love one another and openly forgive. Your heart will thank you for it!

Happy Tuesday, Lovelies!

Blooming in Love Part 2

So, I haven't blogged in a couple weeks and just remembered that I never wrote part 2 of our love story! So I thought I'd share it with you today:)
On July 13, 2013 (that date was on purpose because I am VERY OCD), I walked down the aisle and committed my life to my best friend. I am a very assertive and independent person naturally and always loved the idea of marriage, but never thought I could settle down and partner up with someone for life. But when you meet your perfect match your idea of your future starts to change.
We were married in a beautiful chapel in Florida. The kind of chapel with stained glass, dark pews, and a HUGE pipe organ. My wedding day was perfect. Literally. Not a single hiccup.

I wore a beautiful vintage lace trumpet style dress with a chapel length veil. I wanted so badly to wear a cathedral length veil, but I also wanted to have my hair up and didn't think my hair could hold the weight of the veil without falling down! I chose magnolia's for the bridesmaid bouquets but I carried a very simple bouquet made of white roses with a blue ribbon intertwined.

I cried through my whole wedding.
I am naturally an emotional person. I put my whole heart and soul into everything I do; so when I am upset,  I cry; frustrated, I cry; unbelievably happy, I cry. Ha ha!
Our wedding was very short. Our ceremony was about 25 minutes. and our reception was a little over an hour. I'm not a social person naturally. I have to work hard when I'm in large groups of people so it seemed best for us to keep it short.
Ok, enough about our wedding.
3 days later real life happened. Joel and I never went on a honeymoon. We decided to save our money and start life with it and wait until we could have a trip that we both wanted. So, we spent the first 3 days of  marriage at my family's house saying goodbyes, and making the most of our last days together.
Then, on July 17th, Joel and I packed up the last of our belongings and made the 600 mile trek to North Carolina. You see, Joel is from North Carolina, and I was offered a teaching position at a private school and I took it. I had never been away from home. I cried all 10 hours of our trip. But I knew we were headed in the right direction.
A couple months before our wedding, Joel had gotten a calling from the Lord to join the North Carolina Highway Patrol.  He had contacted a recruiter and turned in his applications and we were just waiting to hear if he could get an interview or not. We waited, and waited, and waited, and waited, and waited.... you get the picture.
We moved into a small one bedroom apartment. Joel couldn't take on a regular full time job, because once the Highway Patrol calls, you go, immediately. Kinda like the military. So he was working off and on for a man he used to work for in high school doing repairs on rental houses and bringing home about $100 a week. I was teaching at a private school making about $16,000 a year...... You can tell our finances were tight. We lived each week off that $100 that Joel brought home, using it for our gas and groceries. We (thankfully) didn't have any debt at the time and it was a true blessing. But we also didn't have any furniture. We had a bed and two dressers.....
For the first 6 months of our marriage we ate and sat, and talked, and planned our life on the floor of that one bedroom apartment. But if you saw us you'd have thought we were millionaires.
I had my struggles living so far away from my family, but I had a patient husband who held me through the tears, and kissed away my sadness. I'm happy to say the homesickness starts to go away. I still miss my family 3 years later, but I absolutely LOVE my North Carolina living.
It was about 8 months after we were married and we still hadn't heard from the Highway Patrol. We were getting frustrated and tired of living on a tight budget. And one night Joel had it out with Jesus. He told the Lord in plain words "if the Highway Patrol is where you want me to be, You have to open the door. So do it!"
Not three minutes after He told the Lord, He checked his email and there was a message from the Highway Patrol... "be in Raleigh at (this date/time)."
We cried, we laughed, we thanked the Lord for opening the door. And I have never forgotten that moment. The first time I saw the Lord move and openly work in our life. The Bible directs us to ask, seek, and knock. To pray specific prayers. To tell the Lord exactly what you want. and I'm here to say that it's true. He will tell you and give you what you want if you just ask.
What we didn't know was the struggle that was going to come from being in the Highway Patrol. But I'll write more on that later:) Being a law enforcement wife has it's pros and cons, but nothing compares to knowing that your husband is in the center of God's Will and that, I wouldn't change for anything in the world!
 Happy Friday Y'all!

A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes

I am a very ambitious thinker. I think most women are until life gets a hold of them. A 9-5 job, meals that have to be prepared, dishes piling up in the sink, bathrooms that need cleaned, children that need attention, and the never ending laundry piles. I find myself stuck in this routine of life, Get up, get dressed, go to work, come home, cook dinner, clean up, go to bed..... But that's not what life is all about.
I was recently challenged by a friend of mine to create a bucket list of things I want to do for myself. No matter how jumbled and crazy it looked or sounded. So I did just that! It took me about a week of serious thought to create a list that included all the random ideas and thoughts that stay in the back of my mind. So here it is:

  • Go to cosmetology school ( been my dream since I was 15 yrs. old)
  • Take an interior design course
  • Learn how to stage houses
  • Get my realtor's license
  • Create a company of subscription boxes that send women items each month that will help and encourage them in their daily walk with Christ.
  • Write a devotional (currently in progress)

So what's yours? Make a bucket list of dreams and post it somewhere. Inspire yourself daily to do something toward accomplishing at least one of those things! It's amazing how in just a week this has motivated me and transformed my way of thinking!

Blooming in Love: Part 1

I am madly in love with my best friend.  If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook or stand beside me for more than 30 seconds,  you know just how crazy our life can be sometimes, but I wouldn't trade this adventure for anything! That being said, when I first met Joel I was fresh out of a very broken and confusing and long relationship with a guy that I "thought" was " the one." I was 20 years old, a Junior in college and ready to settle down and get serious. Needless to say, I was a whole lot of broken with a whole lot of confusion. BUT God had better plans for me.

In July of 2010, at the age of 19, and thanks to a family that never gave up on me (props to my sister Megan) I received Christ as my Savior. Within 6 months after that, I lost a lot of things, two of which were: friends that I shouldn't have been associated with, and a boy-man I shouldn't have been dating.  I was battling with self-confidence and learning to love myself the way God intended for us to love ourselves and I swore off dating until I could learn the healthy way to love and be comfortable with myself alone. BUT once again, God had different plans.

2 weeks after my break-up, I was taking interterm classes. Business Statistics in fact. (One of my favorite classes out of my college career and my 4.0 in that class proved it!) When a mutual friend of Joel, me, and surprisingly enough, my ex-boyfriend decided to play match maker.  He convinced this guy he worked with (Joel) to come and meet this girl he was friends with. And one day Joel decided to stop by and meet me...... and I did not like him. Period. No hesitation. I did not like Joel Daniel Best. THE END.......

But God had different plans. Through this mutual friend, and over a period of about a month,  Joel and I exchanged phone numbers and started talking. Maybe once or twice a week. Nothing big. No commitments. And I knew at that point that this guy would make a great friend. Yep. I categorized him into the friend zone. Then one day he invited me to a basketball game on campus. And I said yes.  Then I spent the next week trying to come up with any and every excuse not to go! Even worse, the night  of the game I dragged my best friend (props to Esther for standing by me) with me. I was so nervous. But I was worried for nothing.

That night I did not stop smiling once. We laughed, we talked, I asked "what?" 100 bazillion times because I couldn't understand his North Carolina accent. It was a perfect relaxing night between friends. Yep, I still categorized him into the friend zone.

Fast forward past 3 more basketball game "dates" and to Valentine's Day. Technically we weren't dating, or even close to it. But I still received a large stuffed bear, which I still have, and a card that said " I really, really, really, really, like you."  Talk about cute. But it was what was written inside that meant the most. Joel is not a romantic person (if you don't know him) but he sure tries! The last line of that card read " I think I'm falling in 'like' with you." Well, I was flattered, enjoyed his  company, and still considered him just a friend.

Then one night after church, we were walking back to the dorms and my sister's apartment and he stopped me on the curb beside the huge clock tower in the center of campus and he looked at me and said, "Shelby, I want to date you, BUT, I want you to know I am dating you with the intent that I am going to marry you."

DEEP BREATHE.

I had never had a guy be straight up with me. I got so scared, I just nodded my head in comprehension and basically ran to my sister's apartment to tell her all about it. When she heard me she responded "would you rather a guy date you just to date you or to marry you?" Good point, sis. So when Joel asked me out on our first official solo date, I said "yes." And so the story goes. We dated for 2 Years before getting engaged and 6 months later said "I do." (more on that story later).

Our first "official" date

I say all of this to say, single girls and dating girls, If that relationship isn't going to end in marriage, why are you dating him? If he isn't strong in his spiritual life, he isn't ready for you. If you don't worship together, pray together, or talk about Jesus together, his priorities aren't ready for you. Dating without marriage is simply taking a piece of someone's heart and memories that don't belong to you. Those feelings belong to your future spouse. If I could go back and change one thing in my life, I would have waited on God to bring me my spouse instead of going out and looking for him. I wouldn't have given away my feelings, and emotions, and pieces of my heart to someone I wasn't going to marry. I would have prayed about my relationship and not just jumped in with two feet.  Joel never dated before me. He prayed for God to bring him his spouse, and he waited until God gave me to him. It's one thing I appreciate and love the most about my husband. It's never too late to wait on God's perfect match.

Weekend Getaways and New Cities

Very recently my sister and her husband have moved up to Williamsburg, Kentucky. I was so excited when I found out that they were going to be only a mere 4 hours from me! So the first 3 day weekend Joel had off happened to fall on Valentine's day, so we made it a weekend trip to Knoxville (45 min. south of Williamsburg), to see my sister and Joel's best friend.

Of course our first stop had to be Wonderworks in Pigeon Forge!

I had never been to Wonder Works and had such a fun afternoon of hands on activities including rock wall climbing and roller coaster simulators! A definite "must-go" in my book!

I'm not sure what I was expecting, but Knoxville was not it. I was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful downtown and the fabulous shops and local restaurant! Friday evening we went out to eat with Joel's best friend to the Downtown Grill and Brewery. The interior was very industrial, which is something Joel and I love, with seating upstairs and downstairs.  The atmosphere was fun and the service and food was fantastic!
Inside the Downtown Grill and Brewery

Neither Joel's friend or his wife are coffee drinkers so our first stop Saturday morning was to Starbucks!
Then we headed to my Sister's In-laws to met up with her and my sweet nephew before heading to lunch downtown again!
Isn't he just the cutest!?

For lunch we went to Café 4 where they have a small bakery and serve Brunch. You can find their menu here. We all went for a breakfast theme. I had a delicious waffle with their "fruit of the day" topping, along with Greek yogurt with fresh strawberries.
Doesn't that make your mouth water????
I also got to spend some sweet quality time with this hunk o' chunck
He had pees and carrots for lunch.

We spent the afternoon doing some shopping here and there. Then we all met up for some line dancing that night at a local "Honky Tonk." I had know idea how to line dance when I walked in, but it was super easy to pick up and so much fun! It was a sweetheart dance that incorporated some slow dancing, so of course I pulled my sweetheart out with me!

On Sunday, we ended up having to leave earlier than expected because a big snow was coming in and we wanted to make it through Ashville and the mountains before it got too bad, BUT we met up with my sister one last time for lunch at Calhoun's on the River.
The atmosphere here was nice and the view was beautiful. With seating right on the river and skylights throughout you get a full experience of God's Creation. The food was delicious. I couldn't decide what I wanted to eat so, I ordered the Calhoun's Trio, that comes with ribs, Tennessee BBQ pork, and Chicken fingers along with a side of your choice. It was PHENOMENAL. You can find their menu here.

We headed back to NC early Sunday afternoon, but made sure we stopped for a mandatory ice cream date. Even in Sub-freezing temperatures:)
Our weekend was so much fun! I know we will be making a lot more trips to Knoxville as we visit my sister and explore the city. I just love doing life with my best friend and can't wait for the many more adventures to come!

Lasagna Lover's Soup

I am a soup girl. Chicken Noodle, Cheesy Potato, Regular Potato, Minestrone, Chili...... I  just love the cozy feel of soup on a cold day!  So when I found this recipe on Pinterest for a Lasagna Soup , I knew I had to make it! When my husband learned I was going to attempt to put Lasagna in soup form, he wasn't quite sure what to expect, but after his 3rd bowl I'm pretty sure he loved it;) This soup is the perfect winter soup that classifies as some serious comfort food! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Ingredients

2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil, divided

1 lb lean ground beef
garlic powder to taste
onion powder to taste
4 cups low-sodium chicken broth
1 (14.5 oz) can petite diced tomatoes
1 (14.5 oz) can crushed tomatoes
2 1/2 Tbsp tomato paste
1 3/4 tsp dried basil
3/4 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp dried rosemary, crushed
1/2 tsp fennel seeds, crushed
1/2 tsp dried thyme
1 tsp granulated sugar
1 1/2 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley, plus more for garnish
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
8 lasagna noodles, broken into bite size pieces (6.5 oz)
1 1/4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (5 oz)
1/2 cup finely shredded parmesan cheese (2 oz)
8 oz ricotta cheese

Directions

Heat one tablespoon olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Once hot, crumble beef into pot, season with salt and pepper to taste and cook, stirring occasionally until browned. Drain fat from beef and set aside. In another pot  Add in chicken broth, diced tomatoes, crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, basil, oregano, rosemary, fennel seeds, thyme, sugar, parsley, the cooked ground beef and season with salt and pepper, garlic and onion powder  to taste. Bring just to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low, cover and simmer 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, prepare lasagna noodles according to directions listed on package, reserving 1 cup pasta water before draining pasta.

Add cooked pasta to soup along with 1/2 cup - 1 cup pasta water as desired. In a mixing bowl, using a fork, stir together mozzarella, parmesan and ricotta.

Ladle soup into bowls, dollop with a large scoop of the cheese mixture and sprinkle with chopped parsley (you can help the cheese melt better by cooking in the microwave after dolloping over soup for a bit but mine melted and mixed just fine!)

General Tso's Chicken

I am not a big Asian food eater. I am always a little questionable at the meat and what they consider "real" meat. This annoys my husband, who LOVES to eat Asian food.  So 99% of the time, if we eat Asian food, I cook it at home. This recipe is a little lengthier BUT so worth it! You can make the sauce and breading mixture in advance to make it go quicker the day of as well!

Ingredients

(Chicken)
–
1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, sliced into 1-inch cubes
– 1 1/2 cups cornstarch
– 1/4 cup salt
– 3 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
– 3 cups vegetable oil for frying, plus 1 tablespoon for stir-frying
– 5 dried red chilis, roughly chopped
– 2 tsp minced garlic

(Marinade)
– 1 tablespoons soy sauce
– 1/4 C. of Rice Vinegar
– 2 egg whites

(Sauce)
– 1/4 cup chicken stock or broth
– 1 1/2 tablespoons tomato paste
– 1 tablespoon soy sauce
– 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
– 1 teaspoon hoisin sauce
– 1 teaspoon chili paste (If you don't have this you can substitute 2 tsp cayenne pepper and red       pepper flakes)
– 1 teaspoons sesame oil
– 1 tablespoon sugar
– 1 teaspoon cornstarch

 Steps:
(1) In a large bowl, combine the soy sauce, rice wine, and egg whites. Coat the chopped chicken in the marinade mixture and let sit for 10 minutes.
(2) In a small bowl, combine the chicken stock, tomato paste, sugar, soy sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, chili paste, sesame oil, sugar, and the 1 teaspoon of cornstarch. Stir until well combined. Set aside.
(3) In a large bowl or deep plate, mix the cornstarch with salt and pepper. Add the marinated chicken and toss to coat. Shake off any excess before frying.
(4) In a large thick-bottom pan/skillet. Heat vegetable oil on high until it begins to bubble and sizzle/pop. Turn heat down to medium, and start frying your chicken.
(5) Working in 4 or 5 batches, add the first batch of chicken cubes (about 6 cubes per batch) and fry until golden brown on the outside and cooked through, about 3-5 minutes. Remove the chicken with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Repeat until all your chicken is cooked.
(6) Turn stove off, drain the oil into a heatproof container and save for discarding. Leave about 2 tbsp oil in your wok.
(7) Reheat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chopped dried chilis and garlic, and stir-fry until just fragrant, about 20 seconds.
(8) Pour in the sauce and stir until it begins to simmer and thicken, about 1 to 2 minutes.
(9) Serve on a bed of rice. Pour sauce over chicken.

Dijon Chicken Panini

It's Here! It's Here! I know you had dreams last night about this recipe and woke up with drool on your pillow.... and rightfully so. This Panini was so delish, it had my husband asking for seconds and thirds and quite possibly fourths! So enough about the amazing-ness of this sandwich, here is the recipe:

Ingredients
       Dijon Chicken Marinade:

  • 1/3 cup of Dijon mustard
  • 2 T. apple cider vinegar
  • 2 T. honey
  • 1 T. lemon juice
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt
       Panini:
  • Slices of whole wheat bread
  • Smoked mozzarella cheese
  • Cooked bacon
  • Dijon chicken
  • 2 tsp Dijon mustard
Directions:

Combine mustard, vinegar, lemon juice, and honey in a small bowl and whisk until smooth. Add spices and stir. Pepare chicken breast and place in a large plastic storage bag. Pour marinade over chicken. Gently shake chicken in closed bag to cover chicken completely. Refrigerate 1 hour. Grill or bake chicken. If baking, preheat oven to 350 cook 20 minutes flip and cook another 20 minutes. Once chicken is cooked, butter one side of each bread slice, spread mustard on non-buttered side of one slice of bread. Add one slice of cheese, as much bacon as you'd like:) and chicken. Top with second slice of bread and toast in a George Foreman Grill, Panini press, or you can toast in a frying pan and flip, or oven. Cook until cheese is melted and bread is golden brown. Enjoy!

Ranch Cheddar Chicken

I know sometimes I get in a rut with my cooking. Working full time with a husband who's schedule is almost never predictable make it hard to enjoy cooking, especially when a lot of nights it's just me. So I get in this rut where I buy the same groceries each week, and make the same meals each week, because they're easy!

Well, the husband challenged me to get creative in the kitchen, like I used to when we were first married. Not such a subtle hint, huh ;) So this week I took the challenge and did, and boy was it worth it. I have the BEST chicken recipe I have ever eaten and it is so easy to make! So here it is.

Ranch Cheddar Chicken:

Ingredients:
  •        4 Bonesless skinless chicken breast ( I used tenderloins because they were on sale)
  •        1/2 C. Mayonnaise
  •        2 T. dry ranch dressing seasoning
  •        1/4 C. grated cheddar cheese
  •        1/4 C. panko bread crumbs
Directions:

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Place chicken in a large baking dish. In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, ranch, and cheddar cheese. Spread on top of the chicken breasts. Sprinkle the panko crumbs on top and spray lightly with cooking spray. Bake for 25 minutes or until chicken is cooked through.

That is it! One of the easiest recipes I've made and perfect for the working homemaker. I made enough to eat leftovers 3 times this weekend for lunch while Joel was at work..... but he ate every last crumb last night! Definitely going on the menu rotation! Hope y'all enjoy this chicken recipe as much as I did!

Happy New Year!

I cannot believe we are already saying goodbye to 2015. Where has this year gone? Like so many others I have taken this past week and reflected on this year and all the many things that have happened. So many new things and changes have been made. Many trials were overcome. And many achievements were made. But looking back on 2015 there is one thing that I can say: Everything that God allowed to happen in 2015 was beneficial to me.  Not a single hard time, trial, struggle, or pain hurt me. In fact, every single thing that happened this year made my year and my life so much better. What a picture of what a loving and merciful God we serve. He never tells us or causes things to happen that will hurt us. I am amazed looking back that Joel and I have made it through this year. It's been a wonderful but very tough year. But God saw us through.

As I focused on 2016 I decided that this year I will make it less about me and more about God. So instead of setting goals for what I want to achieve for my personal life, I have decided to set goals for what I want to achieve this year in my spiritual life. I have assigned each goal a verse or verses that I can memorize to help me stay on track and remind me of my goals for this year. So here they are!

1. To show more kindness, encouragement, and love to those around me.
     -Galations 5:22-26
     - Ephesians 4:32
     - Luke 6:35
     - Micah 6:8

2. To finish a study on Psalms, Hosea, and Galatians
     - Joshua 1:8

3. To be more confident in sharing the Gospel with others
     - 1 Peter 3:15
     - Romans 1:16
     - Matthew 5:16

4. To intentionally strive to know my Savior and create a bonding relationship with Him
     - James 4:6-10
     - John 15:5
     - Proverbs 1:1-33

I will be writing my verses down and putting them on display to remind me each day of my spiritual goals. I encourage each of you to do the same! I love each of you and hope you all have a very Happy and Blessed New Year!

Psalm 119 Study: My Delight

Today's Reading is Psalm 119: 169-176

Psalm 119: 174- " I long for your salvation, O Lord, and your law is my delight."

This is the last day of the Psalm 119 Study, and it did not disappoint! I have enjoyed this study so much. Who would have thought you could find so many promises, blessings, and wonderful facts about Christ in one small chapter of the Bible?? I feel like so many times we overlook the book of Psalm because we associate it with poetry. But poetry is a love language and David, Solomon, and the other authors of Psalm definitely wrote about the deep, immense love of God. So here is my thoughts from the final day:

God and His Word is my DELIGHT. When we cry out, the Lord gives us understanding. When we ask or beg God for something He delivers it. He gives us restitution, grace, mercy, a new life! We just have to ask!! He gives us knowledge, righteousness, help, and delight. And each and every one of these things can be found in and gotten from Scripture. All these things can be gained from a ritual study of God and His Word.

The Lord provides each of our needs, right when we need them. He gives us a clean slate each and every day. He gives us every single tool we need to succeed in life so that we can succeed in eternity.

The more we study the Bible, the more we learn about Christ, and in turn the more we desire to learn more and more about Him. And the more you know, the more you gain from a deep relationship and interaction with Christ.

God is love. Everyday, He does things that prove that He loves us. He gave His only Son to prove how much He loves us, and He sent the Bible to show, throughout the pages, His steadfast and unyielding love for us. Unyielding love. It never stops, Never runs out. Never fails. All these things God has given a wretched sinner like me and you.

When you stop and just dwell on this, God's Love should bring you the greatest delight in your life. It should be something you desire each and every day. Everything in the Bible points back to Christ and His love for us. Every day remember how much we need the Lord and His Word. And He gives it freely because he loves you.

HIS WORD IS OUR DELIGHT

Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree!

The month of December is practically over! Can y'all believe it? There is so much going on at the Best house right now! We started out the month by waking up one morning to Joel's tires being slashed on this Patrol Car. Not a very good feeling knowing your home is being targeted because of your husband's occupation. This incident turned into us moving out of our current house a month early....... like moving out by this Thursday! Yikes! So it was time for me to kick it into gear. The house we are moving into needs A LOT of work. We have put in all new tile and carpet in the entire house and are busy painting and refinishing cabinets in the kitchen right now, but it's not even close to being done. I have packed up one room in my house..... and we had our current move-out inspection this past week where we had to fix all the messes the dogs had made haha! It's so nice to have that done. On top of all that Joel and I have both had a respitory/sinus infection for 3 weeks. Merry Christmas to us!

We both had the week of Christmas off, which was a nice change of pace since Joel has worked all night shift this month and I haven't seen him. If only we hadn't been sick! I'll admit, I am a grinch at Christmas. It is not my favorite time of the year. It's a rush rush season and so stressful with constant running around to Joel's family.

We kicked off the holidays with Christmas at Grandmother's on Christmas Eve. I got to bring a dessert this year and I chose a Oreo-Brownie Trifle. It's one of the most decadent deserts I've ever had! Here is the recipe:

1 Box of Brownie mix (and all the ingredients to make them)
8 oz of Cream Cheese, softened
1 C. Powdered Sugar
1/4 C. Butter softened
3 C. Milk
2 small packages of instant fudge/chocolate pudding
12 oz. tub of Cool Whip
1 Pkg. Oreos, Crushed
8 ox. Tub of Cool Whip

Instructions: Prepare and bake Brownies as instructed on box. Let cool completely and cut into bite sized pieces, then set aside. Blend together Cream Cheese, Butter and powdered sugar until creamy. Because Joel's family is so large we draw names to see who we get a gift for. This year Joel's Aunt Jane drew my name and she bought me a beautiful journaling Bible I had been asking for for months! It is amazing and I recommend it to everyone!

Christmas morning Joel and I shared our Christmas together. We didn't purchase any big ticket items this year. However, I did get a carpet cleaner specifically for pets! I was so excited! I guess that's when you know your officially an adult... carpet cleaners make you happy! I'm glad my husband understands my need for a spotless house haha! We headed up to my In-laws about mid morning to gather with Joel's immediate family. This consisted of his two nieces opening up a bazillion presents! But they were so happy! Then we headed to Joel's Dad's side of the family. (I told you we do a lot of running around!) We gather for Christmas dinner and some socializing before heading home. This year we ended Christmas by going to see the new Star Wars movie. It ended differently than I would have liked, but overall it was good.

Whew! Next year I think Joel and I will be making some changes so that we can slow down and enjoy our Christmas together.

OH! I did get an amazing gift this year from my sister. She purchased an Emily Ley Simplified Planner for me. If you don't know what that is, you are missing out! It is a necessity for all OCD and organizational people out there! And even better. it comes in a gold foil pineapple print! Be still my beating heart!

This week we will be busy moving and getting ready for the New Year! Hopefully I will have a new home tour up on the blog soon!

Merry Christmas! and I hope y'all have a very BLESSED New Year!

Psalm 119 Study: Great Peace

Today's Passage is Psalm 119: 161-168

Psalm 119: 165: "Great peace have those who love your law; nothing shall make them stumble."

There will always be good and bad circumstances in life. Things that we can't control and some things that we can. But because we are Christians we can have a different outlook on life. When you consume yourself in the Lord and His promises it is easier to stand tall and fight through your daily battles than to turn tail and run. We have the promises, love, and encouragement of Christ in our hearts and lives. He promises us these things all through out the Bible! These promises are sweet treasures that we need to hide in our hearts to remind us when things get tough.

We have a peace in our lives that only God can give us; and because of that peace, we don't take to heart the challenges of life. This peace is ours no matter what we face in life and no one can take it from us. When we pursue God fervently and submerge ourselves in His Word, He in turn, uses His Word to bring us wisdom, knowledge, comfort, and strength each and every day. He gives us a peace beyond our understanding so that we can worship and praise Him in every step of life.

HE IS OUR PEACE

Psalm 119 Study: Great Mercy

Today's Reading Passage: Psalm 119: 153-160

Psalm 119: 156- "Great is your mercy, O Lord; give me life according to your rules."

Deliver me! Deliver me! DELIVERANCE. Christ sees you suffering. He sees your trials and He promises you deliverance. His mercies are so great each day and they NEVER run out! They never fail! When you reach a dark season in life, you can cry out to Jesus for mercy. He is there to pick you up in His arms and guide you through every season and trial of your life. He promises to be there. You only have to trust and call on Him.

We find truth & love in who God is. When we understand these things about God, we are able to identify with Him and who He is and ultimately find ourselves in Him. He continuously shows us the way He wants us to be. He is the perfect picture of love & mercy. Unconditional. Knowing this, we can go to Christ in the good and bad times knowing that He will accept us as His child. We never have to fear rejection from God. He accepts us, loves us, shows us mercy, and gives us His strength to continue on our path! He never gives up on you. That is a promise you can hold on to for eternity.

HIS LOVE NEVER FAILS

Psalm 119 Study: ABIDE

Today's Reading is Psalm 119: 145-152

Psalm 119: 151- "But you are near, O Lord, and all your commandments are true."

"I cried out with my whole heart." I feel like sometimes in life we close ourselves off to those around us. We fear loneliness and rejection from others. I am so guilty of this! It's an insecurity that the Lord never wanted us to have. But I have found in this passage that it reminds us that God is not like that.

When we cry out to God, He promises to save us! He saves us from fear, worry, rejection, loneliness, anxiety, sorrow. He gives us His Word as a way to communicate His will with us, and in return, we have prayer so that we have direct communication with God! Both of these things are mobile. We can take them with us wherever we go, in every circumstance we find ourselves in. We can talk with God no matter where we are.

Verse 151 tells us that "Thou art near O Lord." He dwells in our hearts. We can cry out to Him at anytime and He hears us. He is our closest friend. With God you are never alone. God is eternal. He was here at the beginning and will be there with you through the end. His love for you is eternal and never fails. He never gives up on you. You must abide in Him.

HE IS ALWAYS NEAR

Psalm 119 Study: He is Righteous

Today's reading is from Psalm 119: 137-144

Psalm 119: 137 "Righteous are you, O Lord, and right are your rules."

Righteous.   Upright.   Faithful.   Pure.   Truth.   Everlasting.
These are the words used to describe who God is and His Word. These are all the reasons that we should love God. The Psalmist tells us that even though he is despised , he doesn't forget God's Words. How often do we get in a trial, or even a triumph, and forget about God? Trying to fix it. Focusing solely on our own capabilities instead of handing it over to the One who can actually fix it!

The Psalmist then reminds us that God's righteousness is everlasting. All the things of God are everlasting: His love, His mercy, His compassion, His Word. It never ends! It never runs out! It is never failing and He is TRUTH!

When we go through valleys in life we find joy and even delight in the things of God. Dwelling and submerging ourselves into His Word brings peace. It's a balm to our soul because it reminds us of His attributes: righteous, upright, faithful, pure, truth, everlasting. When we truly understand these things about God and His Word; that is when we truly begin to live.

God's Word is: TRUE, TRUSTWORTHY, TIMELESS

Psalm 119 Study: Who God is Changes EVERYTHING!

Today's Reading is Psalm 119: 129-136

Psalm 119: 130- " The unfolding of your word gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple."

God's Word is a wonderful gift! It tells us all about the attributes of God and guides us to make decisions that will fill our lives with blessings. It gives us the knowledge of who God is. As Christians, we should be consumed with knowing God; and by studying Scripture we receive that understanding!

The Psalmist longed for God's will and understanding. He searched and devoured Scripture to learn about Him and so should we. In verse 132 he reminds us of how merciful God is to those who love Him! What a promise!! That means in hard times, God will give us rest in the midst of whatever storm we are going through. He gives us a path to follow day by day, step by step. In this path He will deliver you from the wrongs of this world. Long to learn about Christ. To be like Christ. To show the love of Christ to those around you. When you truly know Him and who He is, it changes who you are.

I love what Kristin Schmucker wrote in the devotional book:
"We do not read Scripture for knowledge alone, but we read it because it is life changing. It helps us to know who God is, and who He is, changes everything!"

Psalm 119 Study: Our Hiding Place

Today's reading: Psalm 119: 113-120

Psalm 119: 114- " You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in your word."

God is our Hiding Place. A place filled with comfort and rest when life gets too hard. He is the person we can go to, no matter what's happening in your life, and find the solace and peace that we need. He is our shield. He is ready to fight our battles for us if we can only have the courage to hand them over to Him.

He is our hope in dark times. The light for our hearts. (Verse 116) Without God there is no life. and without Him our lives of unfulfilled and empty. When we give ourselves to Christ, He will hold us and keep us safe. Christ puts  away the wicked. They are torn down, but those that love the Lord are held safe in his arms.... AND THAT'S A PROMISE!

WE HAVE: A HIDING PLACE, A SHIELD, A HOPE

Psalm 119 Study: Lamp and Light

Today's reading: Psalm 119: 105-112

Psalm 119: 105- " Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."

He is guiding us. A lamp casts a glow only so far and after that you can't see anything. You find comfort in that glow of light because everything is clear and you can see it. But what about the darkness ahead? The things you can't see? That's when you have to have complete trust in Christ to guide you through. It's not always easy to give up that control. It's easy to grab the light and take off running in our own direction. But Christ asks us to wait until he reveals His path for our lives.

He promises to be with us every step of the way. We use His Word to direct us in how to respond and in what decisions to make. I am reminded of the words of a song, " When you don't know what to pray, just say Jesus. There is power in the name, the name of Jesus." Trust His guidance. Give it all to Him and let Him be a lamp unto your feet and a light unto your path.

HE SHOWS US THE NEXT STEP
